KAPIT: Kapit District Council (KDC) will continue to organise the Local Agenda (LA) 21 and other community development programmes next year in all state constituencies in Kapit Division, namely Katibas, Bukit Goram, Pelagus, Baleh, Belaga and Murum.

This was disclosed by its secretary, Jabang Juntan, when speaking at the council’s LA 21 and community development programme at Rumah Rambor, Sungai Melipis near here recently.

He said the event, among others, was to get the community involved in programmes organised by the council, especially on environmental protection and preservation and community development, besides enhancing closer rapport between the community and the council, government agencies and political leaders.

He lauded the staff of the council for their commitment and dedication and thanked the councillors and the various government agencies for the success of the programme.

He also commended the security and development committee (JKKK) of Rumah Rambor for their willingness to host the programme.

Meanwhile, deputy Walikota of Kapit District Council, Cr Lawrence Listin Baling, informed that the LA 21 and community development programme are an outreach programme of the council to provide information to the grassroots on the services and community development programmes provided by the council.

Lawrence disclosed that earlier this year, the council had successfully organised four similar programmes – first at Rumah Ansie, Nanga Sepajie at Sungai Majau in late March for Baleh Zone, then at Uma Kelab, Sungai Asap in Belaga from May 11-12 (Murum Zone), Rumah Melayu at Nanga Latong, Sungai Tekalit, Katibas Song from July 20-21 (Katibas Zone) and Rumah Sekang @ Sigan Renggie at Nanga Belabot, Bawai in Baleh on Sept 21-22 (Pelagus Zone).

The final LA 21 and community development programme will be held at Uma Sekapan, Belaga tentatively on Nov 3-4, which Hulu Rajang MP Datuk Wilson Ugak is expected to officiate, he added.

Later at the function, Lawrence announced a grant of RM10,000 from the council for the JKKK of Rumah Rambor to improve the drainage system of the longhouse.

Among the activities held on the first day (Oct 20) were preventive fogging, talks by various government agencies such as the Land and Survey Department, Agriculture Department and the police on their roles and functions.

On the following day (Oct 21), the programme began with the opening of a service counter by the council, gotong royong, telematch, children’s colouring contest, cooking demonstration, health screening and a talk on fire prevention followed by a fire-fighting demonstration by the Fire and Rescue Department.

In the evening was the closing ceremony, which Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat officiated on behalf of Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Kapit.
